Mistletoe Mysteries
Published in Hardcover by Mysterious Press (November, 1989)
Author: Charlotte MacLeod
Average review score:

Death takes a holiday
An excellent sampler of modern (and not-so-modern) mystery writers, this book is a bit uneven in quality but generally lives up to its pedigree. The stories by Muller and Asimov shine. This collection is perfect if your Christmas is not complete without a little bloodshed.

Montana Mail-Order Wife (Harlequin American Romance, No 868)

Quite Good!
This is where two women's lives have become hopelessly entangled -- and only love will set them free!
Rancher Wade Garrett places an ad for a mail-order bride and Rachel O'Riley anwsers it!
Wade is called by the authorities that Rachel has been in a train wreck and they find that she has amnesia.
Rachel has agreed to a marriage in name only as Wade has no need for a wife, only a mother for his son.
As Wade watches Rachel interact with his son and also gets told what he is doing wrong in handling his son, he begans to reluctantly fall in love with his bride to be.
The amnesia complicates everything as Wade realizes Rachel may not be Rachel and she may also be married.
Really a neat story -- and is #1 to "Identity Swap", #2 being Harlequin Intrigue #611 - Stranger In His Arms by the same author.

Moonlight, Madness, and Magic
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (November, 1993)
Authors: Suzanne Forster, Charlotte Hughs, Olivia Ruppreght, Charlotte Hughes, and Ruprecht Forster
Average review score:

three supernatural tales
All three stories have to do with the descendents of Rachael Dobbs and Jonathan Nightingale. In 1690 he betrayed her and said she was a witch, so she burned at the stake, but not before cursing his descendents. The three stories are about his descendents. The first guy is a werewolf, the second a vampire, and the third makes his dreams come to life. In the first two, by Forster and Rupprecht, Dobbs' descendents falls in love with the Nightengale descendent who's cursed, and in the third Dobbs' descendent falls in love with the cursed boy's father. I really like the first and second stories, but the third really didn't go into what was wrong with the boy. Rachel Dobbs' descendent was a witch in the third story, and she just came in and dispelled the evil energy. It was a good read, although actually not that scary.

Murder on High (A Charlotte Graham Mystery)
Published in Hardcover by Berkley Pub Group (November, 1994)
Author: Stefanie Matteson
Average review score:

A "must" read if you ever visit Mt. Katahdin!
This is a great read - it mixes fact and fiction like creaming butter and sugar! The writer obviously did her homework - either visiting the great State of Maine in person, or researching one of Maine's greatest treasures - Mt. Katahdin. She also brought to life the history of the tribal nations in Maine using the "Ghost of Pamola." This story is a murder mystery set on Knife's Edge (Mt. Katahdin) and how, with the help of an "outsider" (New Yorker!), the local police department, along with the nosey townspeople crack the case in record time. Although I was able to knab the killer at the beginning of the book - it was pure luck! You'll never be able to guess the killer, but you'll be in for a visual overload with the perfect descriptions of Mt. Katahdin and surrounding areas. It's a short ride, but worth taking.

My Mother Didn't Kiss Me Good-Night
Published in School & Library Binding by E P Dutton (September, 1980)
Authors: Charlotte Herman, Bruce Degen, and Ann Durell
Average review score:

A funny and comforting book about childhood worries
My daughter asks for this book every night. I think it comforts her to know that other children worry about these things too. This book is about a child trying to figure out what he did to cause his mother NOT to kiss him good-night. Was it when he told the person on the phone that his mother couldn't come to the phone because she has cramps? Was it because he tracked mud all over the floor? Was it because he wouldn't eat his banana yogurt and alfalfa sprouts, or was it because he left the choclate ice cream out? His mother finally comes to tuck him in and tell him that she has to skip the kiss due to the fact that she has a "code". They blow kisses and exchange hugs with their eyes instead. Fantastic illustrations. This is a must have for chilly winter nights!

My Mother Said I Never Should
Published in Paperback by Heinemann (November, 1989)
Author: Charlotte Keatley
Average review score:

What really is the Wasteland?
This is one of the best modern plays I have ever read! This play is a powerful contemporary feminist drama and portrays the lives and hardships of four generations of women of the same family. The action does not always take place chronologically - which can confuse - and occurs between the 1920's and 1980's. It documents some of societies changing opinions and views towards the roles of women. The wasteland scenes are perhaps some of the most interesting in the play. It is in these scenes when all four women can be seen as in their own part of the century as children playing together. The notes included with this edition of the play are most helpful as is the forward by Charlotte Keatley.

Funny, Poignant Compilation
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Especially the short story by Robert Inman, which had me laughing my head off! I've lived my entire life in Charlotte and wasn't aware that we had so many talented folks here. Keep up the good work, Charlotteans!

The Old Dog
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (September, 1995)
Authors: Charlotte Zolotow and James Ransome
Average review score:

Sensitive topic for young children
I think any child who is dealing with the death of a pet will want to hear this story. They can relate to the boy not being able to understand where his dog went. The oil paintings are touching and give the reader a sense for the boy's sadness when he exclaims, "I miss you," to the air. This book will show children how to empathize with others.

Perfect Fools
Published in Paperback by Island Nation Pr (September, 1998)
Author: Charlotte Vale Allen
Average review score:

It seemed that someone was telling me their life story.
This is the story of a woman, born with a hair-lip in London, who lost both parents in World War II. She was shut in a room from birth until she was 7 because of her lip, then went to live with an uncle. The book tells of her life from age 35 until the present, how she learned to love and live a normal life. I especially liked the way the book made me feel that I was reading the words of some one telling me their life story. Nothing seemed contrived, all of the characters actions and decisions seemed real. I enjoyed reading this book and was anxious to keep reading to see how her life turned out.
